This EPL was named as English Premier League (EPL) because of the players came from Britian - not just England, but also hailed from Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Northen Ireland.
The case has not been the same for the past 5 seasons. It is towards the extreme end where there are over 337 foreign players in the Primiership, represented by 66 national states. Incredibly, about close to 60 per cent of players kicking off the new season will be from abroad.Only a mere 40 per cent are the home-grown players ! That shall somehow relates to how England National Team (Three Lions) have been performing the last few years!
In the top four teams - that number rises significantly to 72 per cent, according to a local press statistics data. Many and that include me, believes the tide of foreigners will sweep away any hope England have of winning a major trophy like World Cup again. Geoff Hurst once said: "If English players are not playing in the premiership, how can they expect the national team to be the best of the world?"
So what makes the Premiership English, other the officail language? Arsenal - has none English players in the 1st Eleven! What an irony. Perpharps in 2-3 seasons later - it might well be known as International Premier League - thise time based simply by the amount of money involved as well as the transfer fees and salary scale are practiced.
Nevertheless, i have picked out 5 Top English Players from the Premiership:
- Wayne Rooney - 21 yrs old, Man Utd Striker
- Steven Gerrard - 27 yrs old, Liverpool Midfielder and Captain
- John Terry - 26 yrs old, Chelsea Defender and Captain
- Rio Ferdinand - 28 yrs old, Man Utd Defender
- Owen Hargreaves - 26 yrs old, Man Utd Midfielder
